21. Darth Maul is found by his long-lost brother, Savage Opress

Episode:  Season 4 Episode 21: Brothers

"Episode Summary: The dark warrior Savage Opress is on a quest to find his long-lost brother. Could Darth Maul truly be alive, after more than a decade since his gruesome bisection at the blade of Obi-Wan Kenobi? Savage voyages into the depths of a twisted planet to find whatever became of the fallen Sith Lord."

The Moment: Savage eventually tracks down his long-lost brother, who we discover is the former Sith Lord Darth Maul, who is not the same as we found him in The Phantom Menace, where he is now fractured both mentally, physically, and in his soul.

Why It’s Memorable: We all weren’t the only ones who were totally shocked with Maul still being alive, just ask the Lucasfilm writing group. I mean, being cut in half and surviving is, well tough to do. I had my doubts, but the story group proved how wrong my assumptions were, with the Maul story arc being not only some of the best Star Wars moments ever but maybe in animated history.

This begins the relationship and partnership of two brothers who just met in adulthood, who were both robbed of that relationship when Sidious kidnapped Maul many years ago as a child.

Maul even references later on in Rebels (to Ezra) of how much his relationship with his brother meant to him, which we find out soon on how that is taken away from him once again.

This triggers also the revenge and hatred of Maul for Kenobi, which is a major theme not only in the Clone Wars but later on in his comic run and in Rebels.

Maul was found quoting ““Far above, far below. What once was great is rendered small”, which we find out later in the run(2017) that those words are Sith lessons and proverbs. Talk about paying attention to detail, Lucasfilm.
