Who are some possible foes for Obi-Wan in his upcoming standalone film?

An Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars standalone film is in early development, according to The Hollywood Reporter, with director Stephen Daldry helming the project. We anticipate that Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan in this particular film and that the setting will take place with the Jedi Master exiled on Tatooine.

With the crazy old hermit in exile, the list of villains are definitely small, but we will take a crack at it. Here are the most likely villains for an Obi-Wan film:

Jabba the Hutt

In Star Wars Marvel comics #7, #15, and #20, we travel back to when Obi-Wan is on Tatooine, with the exiled Jedi Master watching over Luke Skywalker from a distance.

One of the story arcs has Jabba the Hutt sending Wookiee bounty hunter Black Krrsantan, tracking down the unknown thorn in his side, who happens to be Obi-Wan, that’s been thwarting his men who have been oppressing the people of Tatooine.

With help from an unexpected ally, Obi-Wan is able to defeat the fearsome bounty hunter and Jabba’s men, remaining anonymous.

Seeing this conflict on the big screen would make a lot of sense, with Obi-Wan unable to let innocent settlers on Tatooine be taken advantage of by the slimy Hutt. I would love to see Jabba and Obi-Wan meet face to face at the end of the conflict.

Tusken Raiders

Sand people, or worse! When Obi-Wan encounters Luke for the first time in A New Hope, he rescues the young Skywalker from a group of Tusken Raiders. The crazy old hermit seems to know an awful lot about these Tuskens, with that knowledge most likely coming from the first-hand experience.

We also learn in the Star Wars: Complete Locations visual guide that Obi-Wan, had in-fact, acquired a few Tusken items, such as a Gaffi stick and other relics, meaning that he must have collected those from his interactions with these masked foes. Seeing how that came about on screen would be awesome and it’s always good to see the Tuskens put in their proper place.

Owen Lars

Also in the Marvel comic Obi-Wan story arcs, the Jedi Master faces other adversaries on Tatooine. One would think that Luke’s Uncle and Obi-Wan would be allies, but Owen wants nothing to do with the crazy old hermit. In fact, Owen threatens  Obi-Wan, whenever he interferes with Luke, even though it’s done from the shadows come from a distance.

Seeing this personal conflict between the two in the film is a must have and adds more emotional depth to Obi-Wan, since he wants to train the child of Anakin Skywalker, but is forbidden to do so by Owen.

Darth Vader

Darth Vader’s dialogue with Obi-Wan in A New Hope makes it highly unlikely that the two will have a face to face encounter in this film. However, Vader can still play the role of the villain from a distance.

Showing parallels of Kenobi and Vader, with each on their own quests in the film, with Vader hunting down the surviving Jedi, including searching for the hated Kenobi, while the Jedi Master is protecting Vader’s son Luke and then senses that his former apprentice is, in-fact, still alive, would make for an epic story.

Himself

One’s biggest enemy is normally the struggle within one’s self and that is particularly true for Obi-Wan. With his life as a Jedi now over due to the great Jedi purge of Order 66, dealing with life as a non-practicing Force user would be extremely tough for Obi-Wan.

In order to stay hidden, he would have to often make difficult choices, especially with all the injustice thriving on Tatooine, where he might even choose not to intervene, even though it could cost the life of someone else.

Also dealing with the personal struggle of failing and then killing, or so he thinks, his best friend and former student, having the burden of watching over his son, but from a distance. The struggle of not using the Force and unable to train Luke or even interact with him must eat at the Jedi Master’s soul.

Having flashbacks of times past and possibly learning of Vader’s survival, would make for some personal demons and enemies within Kenobi. He could truly become his own worst enemy in the film and that would make for a Star Wars story unlike any other.
