Rumors recently surfaced that an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone film is projected to drop in 2020. Can we trust these rumblings?

Anytime rumors regarding upcoming Star Wars films surface, it’s important to take them with a grain of sand — you know the rest of the quote by now. A prime example being rumblings on an upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars Story.

Over the course of the past year, momentum’s gained for an Obi-Wan film, including a director tied rumored in connection to the project — with a working title known as the “Joshua Tree.”

The Maker, George Lucas himself was spotted near possible filming locations for this “hypothetical” Obi-Wan project. Ewan McGregor even expressed interest in doing the film and is looking very Obi-Wan like of late.

More from Dork Side of the Force

Late yesterday, more rumors surfaced that an Obi-Wan film is in pre-production and will begin filming in 2019, with a projected release date of 2020.

According to FanthaTracks.com, their source had this to say about the rumored Obi-Wan film:

"The project is sufficiently along that an art department is now in full pre-production mode at Pinewood Studios, England with ancillary work being carried out at Industrial Light & Magic in London.  A number of concept artists, prop modelers, and storyboard artists are working as a team across the two locations on the film, with the group growing in numbers every month."

A few hours later, another source backed these claims, stating they were legitimate.  But, can we trust these rumors?

Yes, and no. The collection of rumors adding up is promising and usually where you see smoke, there’s fire right behind it. The same is likely right here.

However; you cannot take anything to the bank until Lucasfilm and Star Wars make the official announcement.

If these rumors are true, why are they waiting so long to make the announcement? They may want to see how Solo: A Star Wars Story does before, making sure it’s worth the risk financially if Solo flops — which it won’t.

Or, the most likely option they are waiting until Star Wars Celebration in 2019, wherever ends up being. There’s no doubt in my mind that we will get an Obi-Wan film at some point, but until it’s official, I won’t hold my breath. Just announce already and let’s be done with it!

Next: Possible Kenobi film villains

Ewan McGregor’s performance in the Star Wars prequels as Obi-Wan Kenobi is universally celebrated and possibly the film that may bring the divided fandom back together. We can only hope.

Help us Obi-Wan Kenobi; you’re our only hope.
