Word around the net has the new series focusing on Mandalore after the fall of the Empire.

Details are starting to come in regarding the new live action Star Wars series. So far the information that we’ve gotten pertains mostly to how expensive the show will be (very). Characters, locations, and plot-lines have been kept fairly close to the chest by those in the know. Until recently.

Over at makingstarwars.net a rumor has it the focus of the new show is that of the planet Mandalore and the associated people. Jason Ward, editor-in-chief, summarized the major points of the rumorHere of course, we remind you that what follows is merely speculative:

"Sources believe Jon Favreau’s Star Wars live action series, which is set around three years after Return of the Jedi is about the planet Mandalore. It sounds like when the Empire falls, Mandalore falls into a state of turmoil and the series is about restoring Mandalore to its former self and how Mandalore sways will have huge galactic ramifications."

Mandalore of course has a long and complex history within the Star Wars diegetic universe. In the time of the fall of the Old Republic the Mandalorians fought and often dominated the Jedi Order. It was during the struggles of that epoch that members of House Vizsla snuck into the Jedi Temple to retrieve their fabled Darksaber – a weapon of no small importance to the then warlike people.

One such wielder of the Darksaber was Pre Vizsla, the bellicose chieftain of Death Watch. He was coincidentally voiced by none other than Jon Favreau. It’s not too far a stretch to suggest that during his time voicing the character that Favreau came to be highly interested in the world of Mandalore and desired to further explore its intricacies.

For audiences who grew up with both The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels, seeing a live-action, slightly older skewing, investigation of Mandalore and her people would prove a very enticing offer indeed. One can’t forget that the goal in offering Game of Thrones level prestige viewing is to get subscriptions for the as-yet-unnamed streaming service Disney has in the works.
