13. Chirrut Imwe – Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
So no surprise here, Chirrut Imwe comes in at No. 13 of best Star Wars character introductions straight after his good old pal Baze Malbus.
Chirrut, also a former Guardian of Whills, is the last character from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story to make the list. Sorry Jynn, sorry Director Krennic, you were good characters but you weren’t good enough to make the list, and Darth Vader can’t be included with his badass, lightsaber massacre scene at the end of the movie because that obviously wasn’t his introduction to the franchise. It was an amazing moment though.
Anyway, back to Chirrut. Introduced to us on the streets of Jedha; Chirrut intervened in the capture of Jyn and Cassian. With nothing but his big stick, his belief in the force, and the will to do good, the Stormtroopers were obviously outmatched. Why on earth did they think they could bring down this blind man with nothing but blasters and sheer volume of numbers? Chirrut was clearly going to win this fight.
And he did. Chirrut made quick of the Stormtroopers, and without so much as breaking a sweat. It brought fresh and clear memories of Jedi and I think we all sat there waiting for him to pull out a lightsaber.
That of course never happened; Chirrut is not a Jedi, although there is an argument that he is force sensitive. His introduction still left us speechless however and most importantly of all, satisfied. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was billed as having no Jedi and that caused a bit of hesitance, but Chirrut made up for that.
