Where you know them: Tom is something of a newer voice in the Hollywood film scoring scene. But don’t let his relative newness put you off. He has had a long and storied career in the electronic music scene as Junkie XL, and has studied scoring films under none other than bombast king Hans Zimmer. Of special interest to any aspiring film composers out there, Tom also has a very active YouTube channel where he details his processes, gear, and gives insight and tips for breaking into the industry. You’ve heard Tom’s music in the films Man of Steel, Batman V Superman, Deadpool, and the rip-roaring Mad Max: Fury Road.
Why they work for Star Wars: Tom is a more left field choice for Star Wars. That is not something to be wary of in my opinion, it’s something to be leaned into. If given the chance to write for a Star Wars film, Tom would bring a really fresh outlook. He has a unique grasp on the concept of theme as well. Some of the best musical cues for Batman V Superman were his contributions. His freshness could be what is needed to help future films stand out from the legacy of the Skywalker Saga.
