6. Black Mirror (“USS Callister”)

Every moment of Netflix’s original tech anthology series Black Mirror is excellent. If you aren’t already watching this show, then you definitely should be. However, one episode stands out above the rest: the season 4 premiere, “USS Callister.”

This episode follows Robert Daly, an inspired programmer who helped create the explosively popular online game Infinity. In his day to day life, Robert is looked down on by his fellow employees. So when a new girl in the office begins to treat him kindly, Robert latches on. . . in the worst possible way.

Unbeknownst to the new employee, Robert steals some of her DNA and injects her persona into his own private version of Infinity called USS Callister. To give away any more would be to spoil everything, so just believe me when I say you should check out this episode immediately.

While “USS Callister” certainly has more ties to Star Trek than Star Wars (the episode was clearly inspired by Trek lore), don’t be so quick to write this one off. The installment has exactly what Star Wars fans crave. You have the space aspect, the high-stakes action, even the humor.

I especially think that fans of The Force Awakens will enjoy “USS Callister.” While Star Wars has always had an excellent female voice in Carrie Fisher, actress Daisy Ridley got to bring a starring heroine to life in TFA. Similarly, in “USS Callister” our heroine is played by Cristin Milioti. She does a great job at taking the reigns and proves, as TFA did, that you don’t have to rely on a dude to give a project all the star power it needs.
