13. Stranger Things

A major part of what made Star Wars so unique back when it first premiered in 1977 was how it presented an entire galaxy for fans to sink their teeth into. Similarly, Netflix’s original fantasy drama Stranger Things presents its very own world.

This series is set in fictional Hawkins, Indiana in the early 80s. From the outside, things in Hawkins look entirely normal. There’s something sinister going on here though.

Dark things begin to come to light after the disappearance of local boy Will Byers. His friends and family start a mad hunt to discover what happened to him and their journey will lead them to some startling discoveries about the nearby Hawkins National Laboratory. Things in Hawkins aren’t as safe as they would appear and the boys will have to face off with very real monsters if they ever hope to protect their friends.

While Stranger Things dives more into fantasy/horror, there’s still so much to really obsess over here. Just as fans once lost their minds over the lore of Ewoks or the philosophies of the Jedi Order, young Netflix viewers can go ham over the origin of the Demogorgon or the nature of the Upside Down.

Fans have really latched onto the concepts, too, with costumes from the series becoming explosively popular at conventions and Halloween parties, old board and video games featured on the series getting a resurgence in popularity and even hip-hop taking influence from the series (it’s true!). There’s a lot to love here, so Stranger Things might make for your next great obsession.
