1. Star Wars: Poe Dameron (2016) #1

Written by Charles Soule, Star Wars: Poe Dameron #1 is the genesis of Poe Dameron. Most were introduced to Poe Dameron in The Force Awakens, but there is only so much back story provided in the film. That’s where this comic comes in; it fills in some of the history about his transition from Republic pilot to Resistance champion.

The backstory tells of his Resistance selection by General Leia Organa, and also reveals some of his exploits as an X-wing pilot. He is tasked with leading a top-secret squadron and will be accompanied by his little buddy BB-8. The squadron’s mission is to investigate important locations for the Force, and it reads like a very compelling spy story with all sorts of twists and turns.

Along the way, their investigation was somewhat focused on finding Luke Skywalker, which led them to Lor San Tekka. Subsequently, they travel to a mountainous planet named Ovans, where they encounter a cult of people known as the Crèche. The story is brilliant and does an excellent job of setting up the exploits of Poe Dameron. Adding in a cliff-hanger at the end perfectly sets up the remainder of the series and the clash with The Order. If you love Poe Dameron in The Force Awakens, this is a must-read comic.
