28. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
When Star Wars fans start to critique movies based upon the quality, depth, character development, and art of video game, there is an imbalance in The Force. That’s just how good Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is.
The mission
Knights of the Old Republic has a complex story where players must act as a Jedi in order to defeat the deadly Darth Malak, a Dark Sith Lord whose army is attacking the Republic. One of the trailers laid out the grim scenario, “For centuries, Alderaan stood as a beacon of hope in the Republic. But the Empire came, and with one savage strike brought Alderaan to their knees.” With time running out, and a minimal number of people fighting for the Republic, it’s up to the player to stop Dark Malak.
Gameplay
While initial choices are from three character classes, the decisions made by the player in the game determine whether or not they continue on the path of good, or slip into the clutches of the Dark Side. Which is actually a really cool angle because it plays out like one of those old “choose your adventure”-books that had multiple results, as well as mirroring Dark Malak’s actual life.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic may just be the best Star Wars video game, and it expands Darth Malak as one of the most incredible expanded universe Star Wars villains in the entire franchise. Who’s ready for a Knights of the Old Republic trilogy movie?!
