25. Han in carbonite (Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back)

Han, Leia, Chewbacca and C-3P0 find themselves in a precarious situation as they end up being captured in The Empire Strikes Back. In the scene, we also see Lando and Darth Vader. Lando is a guy who is willing to help as long as he’s able to save his own skin, which is what he’s doing here.

Han is the only one who ends up frozen in carbonite, though. Chewie disposes of a few stormtroopers before that happens. He’s understandably upset, but they’re a little outnumbered to be trying to escape. From the looks of it, everyone knows that being frozen is going to be pretty bad, but it isn’t until Han is taken out in the carbonite that they know just how bad it is.

Han certainly does not come out the way he went in. There’s a look of pain on his face and it makes Leia look a little uneasy when she sees that. Obviously, Han ends up being fine in the end, but that’s not something the audience knows in that moment when watching the movie for the first time. It leaves you wondering what exactly will happen with Han and if he’ll be okay in the end.
