23. Luke meeting Yoda (Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back)

“Now all I gotta do is find this Yoda. If he even exists.” That’s what Luke says to a worse for wear R2-D2 after he plugs the droid up to a power source. He’s not totally convinced that the Jedi Master is even real or that he’d be in such a creepy place on Dagobah.

Luke felt like he and R2 were being watched when Yoda comes up behind them. Instinctively, Luke points his blaster right at Yoda having no clue that he’s the Jedi Master who he was sent there to find. Luke tells Yoda that he’s looking for a great warrior. To be fair, Yoda is acting a little crazy as he goes through all of Luke’s things, which certainly does not make him seem like a great warrior.

The fact that Luke has no idea the entire time that he was, in fact, talking to Yoda is what makes this moment so great. Did he not want at least a description of Yoda before he set out to find him? That seems like it would have been helpful to him. I think Yoda’s actions in this scene are more shocking than the fact that Luke has no clue he’s actually talking to the Jedi Master. It also makes it way more entertaining that Yoda acts like he’s taking Luke to him when he is him.
