Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith No. 24 review: Destiny

In the penultimate issue of Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith, Vader will finally face the Dark Lord who took advantage of and betrayed him. But not without consequence.

When we left Vader on Mustafar, the Sith Lord Momin had just used the portal to the dark side to bring himself back to life. Now Darth Vader must face an unexpected enemy and risk losing everything (again).

SPOILERS AHEAD for Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith No. 24! You have been warned.

Battle rages. Not only must Vader fight off Momin – he must also protect his fortress against the Mustafarian natives determined to destroy it.

As is to be expected, Vader is the one who emerges victorious, despite burying himself and everyone around him in fire.

But of COURSE Vader uses the Force to preserve his own life, emerge from the destruction, and return to his castle to face his true opponent.

In possibly one of the best moments in this comic so far, we see Vader emerge from the lava, extinguish his own flaming armor, and keep walking.

Fire may have all but destroyed him once. But he wasn’t about to let it burn him again.

Which is the perfect lead-in to the moment when Vader defeats Momin, approaches the open portal, and declares:

“My destiny is my own.”

This line holds so much significance if you look at Vader’s entire character arc so far. For so many years, his former self (Anakin Skywalker) was told he was the Chosen One – that his destiny had long since been written for him; that he had no power to choose.

It’s that belief – and many other factors – that convinced him to let the dark side overcome him. He believed it was the ultimate power he would obtain that would fulfill his destiny.

In this moment, he declares once and for all that whatever happens, he’ll do anything to make sure it goes his way.

As we know, this only plunges him deeper into what the dark side apparently has to offer him. It will be years still before he overthrows Palpatine and restores balance to the Force.

It’s hard to believe this wasn’t the ending of the series, which means we’re in for something pretty extraordinary as the story concludes.

One issue left before it’s all over! Judging by the fact that this series has only gotten better since it started, I think it’s safe to assume that final page is going to leave us feeling heartbroken yet fulfilled.

It’s been great getting filled in on the gaps between Revenge of the Sith and Rebels. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see exactly where this story arc ends and where the next one begins.
