The director and Star Wars fan lauded the set of the upcoming conclusion to the sequel trilogy.

Fellow Star Wars fan Kevin Smith praised the set of Star Wars: Episode IX while discussing his recent visit to it on Good Morning America.

Towards the end of the segment, Smith mentioned his recent trip to England to see J.J. Abrams, the man who headed up The Force Awakens and has returned to direct Star Wars: Episode IX. Smith said he heard plot details on set and assured us that the movie will be “fantastic.”

The words are encouraging, especially considering the polarizing response received by its predecessor, The Last Jedi. Smith, a podcaster who hosts Fatman Beyond, is a pretty reliable source in my view. I’ve been listening to the podcast for about two years and every time he gives a take on a movie I haven’t seen yet, I usually end up agreeing with him after seeing it for myself.

Smith compared the set to “a small country” and gave high praise to Abrams.

"Number one, J.J.’s doing the Lord’s work, man. This movie looks fantastic. It’s a year away, but man it looks fantastic. I wept on set because I saw somebody give a career-best performance. Somebody I’ve seen in these movies before. I rolled a tear, it was so darn powerful. Biggest set I’ve ever seen in my life. The dude’s not directing a movie, it’s like he’s directing a small country. The thing is so massive."

I’m particularly curious to see which performance Smith was talking about. My gut tells me that it’s Billy Dee Williams, who’s coming back to the role of Lando for the first time since the original trilogy. Another guess is Adam Driver, whose role of Kylo Ren could take a franchise-altering turn in Episode IX.

Smith’s words are comforting for me because I just feel like Episode IX has so much work to do. So many holes are glaring now that The Last Jedi is behind us, but it seems like there’s no one better to fill in the gaps than Abrams, who kicked off the sequels with a bang.
