Star Wars: Episode IX: When to expect the first trailer

One of the most anticipated movies of 2019 is Star Wars: Episode IX. Here’s when we can expect the first teaser trailer to be released.

Set to be released on December 20, 2019, the currently untitled Star Wars: Episode IX is expected to be one of the most anticipated movies of 2019.

As of now, not much is known of what the movie is set to entail, but now that we are less than a year away from the film’s release, we can expect more details to be revealed in the coming months.

J.J. Abrams, who directed Episode VII: The Force Awakens, co-wrote the upcoming film and was announced as the director after Colin Trevorrow left the project in September of 2017.

After The Last Jedi received a mixed reaction from fans and Solo: A Star Wars Story under performed at the box office, many are hoping Episode IX will be a course correction for the franchise, as it will look to give a satisfying conclusion to the new trilogy of films.

As of now, very little is known about what the film’s plot, as The Last Jedi left the franchise on a somewhat ambiguous ending, but it has been confirmed Carrie Fisher’s General Leia will be featured in the film posthumously through the use of archive footage from the other movies.

Additionally, the new trilogy’s leads Daisy Ridley, Jon Boyega, Oscar Issac and Adam Driver will all reprise their roles as Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron and Kylo Ren, respectively, in what may be each of their final appearance in the franchise.

Despite the bad taste that the last two movies left for some Star Wars fans, many are still hopeful that Abrams can correct the mistakes from the previous films and deliver one that lives up to the fans’ expectations, myself included.

The only question that remains is “When will the first trailer be released?”

The nice thing about Disney is that it is usually pretty consistent with teaser trailer release dates for upcoming films, especially its marquee films and big budget blockbusters.

Episode VII’s second teaser was released on April 16th of 2015, which was about eight months ahead of its release. Similarly, the first teaser for The Last Jedi was released on April 14th of 2017, which the same week, two years later from The Force Awaken’s teaser, and was also eight months before that film’s set release.

It’s safe to assume that, like both Episodes VII and VIII, which each had a release date within the third week of December, Episode XI’s first teaser trailer should be released some time in mid-April of this year.

There is a possibility that Disney releases a trailer for the film during the Super Bowl in early February, but as its has several Marvel film’s set to be released much sooner, with Captain Marvel set for March 2019, Avengers: Endgame in late April, and Spider-man: Far From Home in July, and because those have already released trailers, it’s more likely that those films are more heavily promoted instead.

With Star Wars Celebration taking place in Chicago from April 11-15, it is far more likely that the trailer is premiered during then before it is released online for the general public to view, adding credence to my theory the teaser should be set for a mid-April release, just as the other two have.

So in summary, unless Disney surprises us, expect the title to be released some time in during Star Wars Celebration in April of this year.

Additionally, for those who don’t think they can wait however, the title for Episode VIII: The Last Jedi, was released separately in late January of 2017, so if history repeats itself, we can expect the title of Episode IX to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Regardless of your opinions of the previous movies, I for one am still excited for the eventual release of Episode IX, and no matter when they release the first teaser trailer, I plan on being there to see the final film on December 20th.
