Others get the praise and credit, but R2-D2 is the most important character and also the best in the Star Wars universe. Here’s why.
It seems like R2-D2 is the most under-appreciated hero in Star Wars. While others get more credit, let us take a look at a few things that make the astromech droid and all of his accomplishments worthy of being Star Wars’ best character.
In The Phantom Menace, R2 fixes a shield generator that allows Queen Amidala, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi to escape. That lays the ground work for all the other saves he does. The Phantom Menace is where the legend of R2-D2 begins to take shape.

R2 distracts General Grevious allowing Anakin and Obi-Wan to use the Force and grab their lightsabers back. The small droid always seems to be one or two steps ahead of everyone and every situation.
In A New Hope, R2 is found worthy to hold the Death Star plans and a message for Obi-Wan. He also finds where Princess Leia is being held and shuts down the trash compactor in just enough time. Now his legend is gaining momentum as he fixes Luke’s X-Wing so he could become a hero.
When the hyperdrive failed, it was — you got it — R2 to the rescue. Adjusting it just in time to escape Darth Vader. While on Cloud City he overrode the security code to the docking bay. He did this and much more.
And that’s just a small part of what R2-D2 has done — not even counting everything he in The Clone Wars. Here’s a great video from IGN showcasing every time R2-D2 “saved the day.”
Here is hoping Episode IX gives R2-D2 one more heroic moment. After all it is in his wiring and he always rises to the moment. Making it difficult to have a more important character in the universe.
