With Star Wars: Episode IX slated to be released this coming December, many fans are anticipating the release of the movie’s first trailer. Here’s when we can expect it.

Now that the Superbowl has come and gone, and Disney has yet to release a new trailer for Star Wars: Episode IX, which is set to be the final entry of the new trilogy of movies, fans have been speculating as to when we can expect our first preview of the upcoming film.

As reported in a previous article, a trailer premiere during the Superbowl was speculated as one of the possibilities for our first look at Episode IX, but seeing how that time has now passed, we can look to what are the other potential options.

Disney is usually pretty consistent with teaser trailer release dates for upcoming films, especially its marquee films and big budget blockbusters.

So far, Disney has produced three Star Wars films that have had a December release date, and all three of them follow a similar track record.

The Force Awakens originally released its first teaser trailer on November 28, 2014, but that was over one year before the film’s release in December 2015 because Episode VII was a much more anticipated film than Episode IX is expected to be, as it was the first Star Wars film released in 10 years.

Episode VII’s second teaser was released on April 16, 2015, which was about eight months ahead of its release. Similarly, the first teaser for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was released on April 7, 2016, and The Last Jedi was released on April 14, 2017.

All three of these trailer dates occurred roughly eight months before that film’s set release in December, and as Star Wars Episode IX is also slated for a December release date, it is very likely history will repeat itself and we will get our first look at the upcoming film this April.

As for when it will be released, the most likely place to premiere the trailer would be during Star Wars Celebration, which will be taking place in Chicago from April 11-15, after which it will be officially released to be viewed online.

To further support this, it is being heavily rumored that the Episode IX trailer will be attached to the previews of AvengersEndgame, set to be released on April 26.

This would make a lot of sense, as the upcoming Avengers film is projected to be Disney’s highest grossing film of 2019, and since anticipation for Episode IX is down this time around due to The Last Jedi’s mixed reaction and Solo: A Star Wars Story under performed financially, so releasing the trailer in April so it can be promoted along with the biggest film of the year would be a smart marketing strategy.

So in summary, Star Wars Episode IX is set to be released on December 20 and we can expect to see the first trailer to be released in April (probably).
