Star Wars: With rumored movies potentially set in the Old Republic, what is it?

With rumors of a Star Wars film series taking place during the Old Republic, its time to find out what happened during that time.

A pretty good rumor has come out that David Benioff and D.B. Weiss upcoming Star Wars trilogy will focus on the Old Republic, according to Star Wars News Net.

While only rumors at this time, films taking place during a time of turmoil would be taking audiences on a journey to places they have not seen with characters they are unfamiliar with. What do I mean by this?

The Old Republic has quite the history that set the foundation for future events regarding the battles between the Jedi and Sith. To clarify the Old Republic was a galactic government that existed long before the Clone Wars.

Coruscant, a planet we have all become familiar with thanks to the Star Wars prequels, was the capital. A group of Jedi left the Jedi Order to practice the Dark side of the Force. This break in the Jedi began the Hundred-Year Darkness and thus the birth of the Sith.

The Sith built a shrine that was later replaced with a Jedi temple upon their first defeat. However the defeat did not last long as the exiled Sith settled on the planet Moraband. The Sith returned, as the battle continued against the Jedi until the Old Republic fell.

During this time, the Battle of Coruscant enabled the Sith to take the capital until the Jedi reclaimed it during the Liberation of Coruscant.  In the end with the fall of the Old Republic, the Galactic Republic was born. As we know the Sith are not completely destroyed as seen in the events that occur in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

While this information has been condensed — because the Old Republic spans tens of thousands of years — it’s interesting to think of how deep the Star Wars lore goes. The Old Republic has not been focused on in any of the prequel films in-depth as the story is centered around how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. Later films developed Darth Vader into the villain we know today and the present films continue this age-old fight between good and evil.

If these rumors turn out to be true the films taking place during the Old Republic will take fans way back to the beginning, providing perfect opportunities to connect some dots and introduce new characters and places. I am very excited to see where these endless possibilities will take Star Wars.
