The Final Duel

It’s pretty much a given that one of the biggest moments of Episode IX will be the final duel between Rey and Kylo Ren. They’ve already dueled in each of the past two installments, Rey holding her own against the master of the Knights of Ren.

Speculation surrounds this duel, with fans divided between those who believe Kylo must perish, Kylo should be redeemed, even some who feel that a dark side victory is called for this time around. The possibilities are endless.

My theory is that Rey will achieve ultimate victory over Kylo, ending the threat of the final dark side spawn of the Skywalker bloodline.

Kylo’s struggle between the dark and the light should also come to a definitive end, with there being no doubt about Kylo’s role in the galactic balance of the Force. As if killing Han Solo in The Force Awakens wasn’t enough, perhaps Kylo could gain some extra heat by also killing his own mother, or perhaps even another beloved character like Chewbacca.

Perhaps Kylo even grows so evil and villainous that the First Order’s leaders refuse to follow him, especially if he doesn’t have the ability to hold them together or the vision to direct the First Order to victory. All alone, struggling to see his destiny realized with futility, only seeing the wrongs of his actions at the very end I think is a great way for Kylo to go. He doesn’t have Anakin’s backstory to justify any kind of redemption like Vader, he isn’t even relatable to most of the fanbase like his predecessor.

If George Lucas described Vader as a flawed and pathetic character unable to accept change, how much worse off is Kylo? Vader’s wrath comes as a result of events that many of us can identify with, Kylo is just a misdirected engine of anger and frustration.

I hope you’ve enjoyed perusing what I feel will be the pivotal moments in this final chapter of the Skywalker saga.  What events do you envision for this last installment?  What would be your ideal way to see the saga wrapped up?  May the Force be with you all!
