5. Black Hawk Down (2001)

Black Hawk Down was an intense film about the 1993 Mogadishu raid. It’s large cast saw a number of well known actors including Josh Hartnett, Eric Bana Tom Sizemore, Tom Hardy, Jason Isaacs, and Ewan McGregor. Despite the large cast, McGregor did not get lost in his role.

But he wasn’t a military soldier with years of experience in combat. McGregor played Grimes, a soldier called into this mission who spent his time as a desk clerk.

This wasn’t a film about heroes either. Mogadishu was a disaster with hundreds of deaths in the firefights in the area.

Black Hawk Down told the story of the Battle of Mogadishu partially through the eyes of McGregor’s character is portrayed as a war hero. The crazy thing about it is that his character doesn’t actually exist in real life, of which the movies is based on.

The person who that was supposed was actually convicted of sexual assault, so the writer changed the name of the character. That has nothing to do with McGregor’s portrayal, but it did get attention for the removal of the real life person’s history.

The movie still holds up and was one of Ridley Scott’s finest work.
