2. Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (2005)

You knew this movie would be on the list. Of the three prequel films, Revenge of the Sith was the best of the bunch with so much happening between Anakin and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

This is where we learn how the great Obi-Wan, a general, managed to become a hermit and was only known as Ben on Tatooine. The most harrowing and heartbreaking part of Revenge of the Sith was the fight between Obi-Wan and Anakin.

Anakin is consumed by his anger and fear, and fights Obi-Wan. When Obi-Wan tells him to stand down because he has the higher ground, Anakin refuses, which leads to Obi-Wan severing his limbs. Rather than dealing a death blow to a man he loved like a brother, he left him on  Mustafar to die.

Obi-Wan then helps hide Padme’s children go into hiding, forever watching over Luke.

Our heart broke with Obi-Wan because even though we all know exactly what Anakin became, their brotherly love made it feel so much worse. Instead of Darth Vader being this gruesome image of fear, we learn he had friends, a wife, and people who loved and cared about him.

So much of what humanized Anakin came from his relationship with Obi-Wan (and obviously Padme). We felt McGregor’s distraught and heartache so deeply. His pain was our pain too.
