The Star Wars: Episode IX trailer is finally here and it’s pretty badass, especially Kylo Ren’s 2 seconds of footage, but why is he fighting the Knights of Ren?

Star Wars Celebration started with a bang yesterday with the Star Wars: Episode IX panel. Following an insightful panel with J.J. Abrams, Kathleen Kennedy and the cast of the upcoming movie, we finally got the Star Wars: Episode IX trailer we have all longed for and the title for the final installment of the Skywalker saga, aptly named, “The Rise of Skywalker.”

The teaser trailer, if you haven’t seen it already, is filled with one epic scene after another. All of the main characters feature, along with some surprises thrown in as well; a certain voice at the very end is the biggest surprise of them all.

Out of all the characters  featured, Kylo Ren probably featured the least, appearing for what seemed to be two seconds at best. However, that two seconds was enough to get us super excited about his upcoming storyline.

His short appearance also raised one of the biggest questions of all from the trailer, why is Kylo Ren fighting the Knights of Ren?

The Knights of Ren are expected to appear and it’s about time too, as we have been waiting for them to feature since Star Wars: The Force Awakens. We recently got a good look at them in the Star Wars: Episode IX leaked retail poster and character sheet, which showed them wearing the ankle-length robes we have become accustomed to with Jedi and Sith, hooded and masked. They also carried a range of different weapons, such as a massive meat cleaver.

That description describes the character who was pretty much body slammed to the floor by Kylo Ren in the trailer. Now, there is always the chance it isn’t the Knights of Ren, it could be Resistance fighters, but Resistance fighters are rarely hooded, masked, and wielding hand-held weapons.

When you look at a hi-resolution images of the Star Wars: Episode IX trailer and compare it to the leaked retail poster showing the Knights of Ren, you can’t help but notice the uncanny resemblance.

But why? Why would Kylo be fighting them? They’re supposed to be on the same side, right?

In theory, yes. From the little we know about the characters they are, but as it has been reported many times and confirmed during the Star Wars Celebration panel, a lot of time has gone by since Star Wars: The Last Jedi. For all we know, they could have tried to overthrow Kylo or something and are no longer on the same side.

One of my fellow writers at Dork Side suggested it could be a flashback scene showing Kylo training the Knights of Ren. It’s not a bad idea, the only problem with it is the First Order Stormtroopers in the background shooting at other members of the Knights of Ren.

What I think is the most likely reason for Kylo going up against the Knights of Ren is a Kylo redemption arc. It’s been talked about before how Kylo will be battling within himself between the Light and Dark Side of The Force and it’s something we have seen throughout the previous two movies.

With this being the final installment, things have to come to a head for Kylo. A choice has to be made, redemption, like Vader in Return of the Jedi, or to go down in Star Wars lore as an irredeemable bad guy. I honestly think it will be redemption, he will try to undo the terrible he has done and that involves going head to head with the Knights of Ren.
