Disney Parks: Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Panel Recap

Today, Disney unveiled brand new details and footage inside of Disneyland and Disney World’s newest land, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge!

On Day 2 of Star Wars Celebration in Chicago, Walt Disney Imagineering and Lucasfilm executives unveiled never-before-seen details of Disney Parks’ new Star Wars-themed land at the Galaxy’s Edge Panel. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens at Disneyland in Anaheim, California on May 31, 2019 and at Disney World in Orlando, Florida on August 29, 2019.

The panel consisted of Walt Disney Imagineering’s Scott Trowbridge, Asa Kalama, Margaret Kerrison, and Chris Beatty and Lucasfilm’s Doug Chiang and Matt Martin.

Scott Trowbridge claimed that Galaxy’s Edge “is the biggest project Disney has ever done.”

The panel began with a pre-recorded video of panel host, Josh Gad (better known as the voice of Olaf in Disney’s Frozen) at Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland:

Star Wars Teams Up with FIRST

Star Wars unveiled its work with FIRST, a non-profit organization that promotes robotics and STEM education with youths:

Smugglers Run, the Millennium Falcon Ride

Smugglers Run allows guests to not only fly the Millennium Falcon but also become the flight crew.

There will be four guests to a cockpit. Each guest will be responsible for a certain job: pilot, engineer, and gunner. Pilots move the ship around and avoid running into danger. Engineers work to repair damages to the ship. Gunners in the middle defend the Millennium Falcon against TIE fighters.

Rise of the Resistance

Riders will have to fight their way out of a star destroyer after being captured by the First Order!

Ola’s Cantina Music

Fans were treated to a sample of the music that would be playing at Ola’s Cantina! The music was inspired by the classic Cantina Band tune but with a twist.

Coca-Cola incorporated their products into Star Wars thermal detonators. Now THAT’S advertising!

Star Wars Voices Return

Yoda

The great Frank Oz returns to voice Jedi Master, Yoda!

Hondo Onaka

Jim Cummings, legendary voice actor known for voicing Winnie the Pooh and other Disney greats, returns to voice everyone’s favorite pirate, Hondo Onaka!

Nien Nunb

Disney flew all the way to Kenya to find and record the original voice of Nien Nunb, Bill Kipsang Rotich!

DJ Rex

Paul Reubens, better known as Pee-Wee Herman, returns to voice Rex, the former pilot of the Star Tours ride! Rex, by the way, had a backstory created that explains how he ended up partying in Batuu.

Build Your Own Lightsabers

Padawans young and old will have an opportunity to create their very own lightsabers at the park!

Blue Milk, Space Meat, and other Culinary Options

Disney unveiled some interesting food options, including “space meat” heated up by a pod racing engine!

Disney Parks Mobile Game App

Disney’s theme park app will have a Galaxy’s Edge expansion update. Guests will be able to play games and interact with fixtures at the park!

The most important message the passionate panel members wanted Star Wars fans to take from the panel was how much detail, authenticity, and customization was put into the making of Galaxy’s Edge. Every detail was carefully thought out. Each small ornament and design scattered throughout Galaxy’s Edge has a story behind it and are each somehow connected to the films, shows, video games, novels, and comic books.
