Kathleen Kennedy’s interview with MTV News has been making the rounds and there have been a lot of good tidbits in it, including this one about the timeline of Palpatine’s return:
Kennedy told MTV News:
"Oh that goes back to when we were talking about Force Awakens, and you know, just the whole blueprint of where we’ve ended up now has kind of been in the works since then, but there was nothing more thrilling than to be in that room, especially to have Ian walk out on stage. We were waiting to see what that reaction was gonna be."
While it might have been a surprise for fans, it seems it was planned for Palpatine to come back since The Force Awakens. The big question of The Rise of Skywalker is now is just how is Palpatine is back.
Did he never die? Does someone bring him back to life? Is he a force ghost. Is it a holocron of some sort?
I have a feeling he is going to have a big role in this movie because of the reveal in the trailer. If it was just a bit cameo, Lucasfilm wouldn’t have given away so much in the trailer. So I feel he might be the main villain.
