3. Life as a House (2001)

Of all the roles Hayden Christensen has done, his portrayal of Sam Monroe in Life as a House is the one that made people notice. It was just two years shy of his first Star Wars role, and started a series of highly acclaimed movies by the Canadian actor.

Christensen won awards for his portrayal including Breakthrough Performance by the National Board of Review, and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, and Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The movie follows George Monroe (Kevin Kline), who loses his job and is diagnosed with terminal cancer all on the same day. Given the news, George decides to build a house and enlists his son’s (Christensen) help in the process.

Inevitably, things do not go well between the two as they already had a strained relationship. George doesn’t reveal his cancer diagnosis right away either.

Eventually, they find each other again and the father and son share the moments they were looking for.

It was an emotional film that touched on life and death, love and heartache. Christensen did an amazing job and deserved all the accolades he received for this role.
