22. Captain Phasma

Phasma’s home planet of Parnassos suffered from a nuclear disaster, but she remained on the planet. It wasn’t until General Brendol Hux found himself stranded that Phasma ended up joining the First Order. She was a true fighter due to her circumstances and she helped him find his ship in exchange for letting her join the cause.

Immediately, Phasma was an asset. However, that doesn’t mean she didn’t run into problems in the First Order. She survived Cardinal trying to assassinate her. She later plotted with Armitage Hux to kill Brendol Hux. She’s powerful and hard to take down due to her size and combat skills.

Phasma’s back story provides context as to how capable she is as a fighter. However, in The Force Awakens, Finn, who isn’t too terribly skilled and hesitates quite a bit, is able to hold his own against her. Maybe it’s beginner’s luck, but something always felt off about that after I read Phasma by Delilah S. Dawson and learned more about the character.

The moments of fighting with Finn don’t entirely detract from how skilled Phasma is. She’s more than capable of taking people down. Plus, Finn technically didn’t kill her. He delivered a big blow, sure, but without Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo’s actions, things might have played out differently. Despite that moment, Phasma will always be known as a great warrior.
