Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most beloved figures within the Star Wars franchise. He was very wise and fought for a good cause. Obi-Wan often put his own life on the line for others. He did exactly that in A New Hope.
Obi-Wan was the first one to tell Luke about Jedi Knights and the Force. He also gave Luke his own lightsaber which was once owned by his father, Anakin. Obi-Wan gave Luke a path to join the Rebel forces in which he eventually encounters Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. When the group gets involved with Imperial forces onboard the Death Star, it was Obi-Wan who truly saved them.
While Luke, Han, and Chewie went on their mission to rescue Leia, Obi-Wan went on a solo mission to disarm the tractor beam. As he made his way back to the Millennium Falcon, he came face to face with his old apprentice, Darth Vader.
The duo squared off in a lightsaber duel as Vader to be the true master of the Force. He eventually killed Obi-Wan, but the distraction helped allow Luke, Han, Leia, and the others to escape.
