The majority of the Star Wars movies are known as the Skywalker Saga. The character of Luke Skywalker is an integral piece of the entire franchise. After decades of interweaving storytelling, The Last Jedi proved to be the end of Luke Skywalker, at least in the way we knew him.

After hiding at on Ahch-To in isolation for his failure with Ben, Rey sought out Luke for training. He was reluctant at first but later gave in. Rey still had a role in the Resistance but Luke stayed behind, at first. During the battle on Crait, the Resistance forces went head to head with the First Order. Luke arrived and had a heartfelt reunion with his sister Leia before dueling with Kylo Ren, his failed apprentice.

Luke remained unscathed from his fight with Kylo and for good reason. Throughout the whole scene, Luke was still on Ahch-To, Force-projecting himself. The distraction gave the Resistance enough time to make their escape. In the end, Luke sent his message about not being the last Jedi to Kylo before disappearing. His body also drifted away on Ahch-To revealing that he became one with the Force. Luke’s sacrifice gave his sister and his allies another chance at this intergalactic war.
