The Rise of Kylo Ren is the Star Wars comic we need

If you wanted to learn more about the Knights of Ren and Kylo’s uprising, a new Star Wars Marvel comic miniseries is coming to answer those questions.

How did Ben Solo become Kylo Ren?

We got the short version of the story in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Ben had dark thoughts brewing in him and was finally pushed over the edge when his mentor and uncle Luke Skywalker came to the brink of striking him down.

More from Kylo Ren

Yet, we all know there is so much more to that story.

Why wasn’t Ben satisfied with his life? What events led him to seeking out the dark side? And just who are the Knights of Ren?

It seems many of those questions are going to be answered in a new mini-series from Marvel Comics, The Rise of Kylo Ren. It will be written by Charles Soule, who was was the mastermind behind the highly acclaimed Darth Vader series, it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con.

Soule’s tweet says we’re not ready.

And we might not be, but it is exactly the story Star Wars fans need right now. It’s expected to be out in December just in time for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Kylo Ren’s rise and Ben Solo’s fall is important to the tale. As the grandson of Darth Vader, he’s followed a similar track in his path to the dark side. We got a movie trilogy to explain Anakin’s descent, and hopefully a four-part comic series will be able to do the trick.

The comic series should provide context we haven’t been able to get otherwise. While we know Ben Solo’s pedigree, we don’t actually know what caused his fall. We can speculate that he didn’t feel loved enough or that the dark side was just too strong in him. Perhaps he was weak-minded and susceptible to manipulation.

The Rise of Kylo Ren will give us a clearer picture.

I also think the title is interesting because it focuses more on Kylo Ren and his rise to power than than the fall of Ben Solo. While the two are similar, they’re not exactly the same thing.

While we will finally learn more about the Knights of Ren, it feels as though Star Wars fans are being short changed a bit by not getting to see them too much in the movies. While they’re supposed to play a role in The Rise of Skywalker, getting them for only one movie when they were highly touted before the sequel trilogy comes as a bit of a disappointment.

It’s similar to what Lucasfilm did with Phasma. On screen we didn’t get much to her, but it wasn’t until the pages of books and comics that we finally got to learn more about the layered and dynamic woman walking around in a chrome stormtrooper uniform.

Now, we will get to learn just how grisly the Knights of Ren are.
