Star Wars: Benioff and Weiss’ role in the next trilogy may change
The Game of Thrones showrunners might not write all three movies of the next Star Wars trilogy. How will their roles change?
Even though David Benioff and D.B. Weiss signed a megadeal with Netflix, it seemed their work for the next Star Wars trilogy was still intact.
It seems it may have changed a little based on a recent article from The Hollywood Reporter. The piece goes into their new deal with Netflix, but also had this note regarding the pair and their future:
"Sources say the Thrones pair is writing a treatment for a Star Wars trilogy and is committed to penning at least one of the films (the original deal was to write all three). It’s unclear if the duo, who also have another feature for Fox/Disney carved out, will do more than just write for Star Wars."

Granted the paragraph doesn’t say much. It states Benioff and Weiss are still working on a Star Wars trilogy. They will develop the concept for it.
It’s the writing part where things get a little murky. With their new deal, one would imagine they would be extremely busy. So perhaps writing one movie instead of all three was always part of a deal if they signed something like they did with Netflix.
But it’s OK.
I look at this as a moment where it could give a chance for other people’s voices to be heard. While there should be a plan in place from their vision, giving others a chance to write and make Star Wars movies is a good opportunity to add new voices and new perspectives to the franchise.
And, to be honest, if they feel rushed to get their Netflix and Lucasfilm work done, I don’t feel confident they would do well. The last season of Game of Thrones felt entirely rushed.
I don’t want to see that happen with this franchise. I’d rather it be taken care of with someone who has the time and energy to put into the franchise.
I’m not begrudging Benioff and Weiss for getting a huge pay day. I just would like to see people involved who don’t have other big obligations and may be counting down the days until they can work on their next project. Benioff and Weiss have been known to not work on one project at once, which is good to hear though.
There’s still time between now and when their trilogy is set to begin — so a lot could change between now and then.
