New The Rise of Skywalker footage featured in released “Legacy Reel”

We finally have Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker footage from D23. The hype train has just rolled into the station.

As was hinted following the D23 “Walt Disney Studios” panel this past Saturday, new footage from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has been made public today.

The sizzle reel, initially described as a “Legacy Reel”, is around two minutes long, and features footage spanning all three eras of the Skywalker Saga. Debuting on Good Morning America, that particular footage can be enjoyed here:

While not an official trailer, the footage gives us our first look at some pretty provocative images. The headlines will be surrounding one particular image of Rey, dressing in Sith robes, holding a double-bladed red lightsaber. While it remains to be seen just how important “Darth Rey” could be to the overall story of The Rise of Skywalker, having our hero dressed in Sith garb is certainly jarring.

Questions, and theories, surrounding the implications of Rey as a Sith will swell online, and it’s only a matter of time as to when we will, at least, be treated to an actual, full, official trailer. If The Rise of Skywalker is following The Last Jedi’s promotion schedule, we should be looking at October as the month of that trailers release. The Last Jedi had its trailer put our during the halftime of Minnesota Vikings at Chicago Bears, on Monday Night Football. If I had to hazard a guess, we could see the official trailer drop during the halftime of either Cleveland Browns at San Francisco 49ers on Monday 7th October, or Detroit Lions at Green Bay Packers on Monday 14th October.

For now, this legacy reel will have to tide us over. We’ve had precious little to grasp onto regarding information about the upcoming release since Star Wars Celebration, so to see the cogs of this particular machine slowly begin to churn is certainly exciting.

What are your thoughts on this new footage? Give us your theories in the comments! Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is out worldwide on the 19th of December.
