The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson recently gave an update on his upcoming Star Wars trilogy.

Back in 2017, Rian Johnson, the director of The Last Jedi, was announced to be developing and directing his own Star Wars trilogy, to come out following the conclusion of the new trilogy.

However, the past year and a half has been an eventful one for Star Wars fans, as many of the potential spin offs said to be in development were shelved as Disney decided to rethink its strategy following The Last Jedi’s mixed reaction and Solo: A Star Wars Story under performing at the box office.

As a result, while it has not been cancelled, Rian Johnson’s trilogy has been in limbo seemingly since its announcement.

Following the release of The Rise of Skywalker in December of 2019, while Disney will be releasing new Star Wars shows on Disney+, it is set to take a hiatus from releasing new Star Wars films until 2022. Then, a new trilogy will release, with the second and third entries being released in 2024 and 2026, respectively.

It was expected David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’s trilogy was going to be released in that time frame, but after their new contract with Netflix was announced, their status is in question as well.

In a recent piece by Deadline, in which Rian Johnson and his partner Ram Bergman were promoting their new production company T-Street and upcoming movie Knives Out, some light was shed on Johnson’s future with Lucasfilm.

The article itself states that regarding the spin-off trilogy, “(Johnson and Bergman) are crafting a new film series set within the Star Wars universe, and those plans remain on the boards” confirming at the very least that while there is no official time-table, the plans for his trilogy have not been scrapped.

Johnson also commented in the interview regarding his previous experience with the franchise, stating the following:

"“I always focused on directing my own stuff and never had the producing bug. I’m excited to open things up and get the chance to work with talented people and learn from them. In a way, this is very much in the mode of how we’ve always worked, though Star Wars was different for obvious reasons. But we’ve always thought like indie filmmakers, maintaining a degree of ownership and authorship over what we’ve done. This was a way to set up a space where we can make that happen for other filmmakers.”"

While this isn’t exactly a bombshell interview and nothing major was really reported on, this is the first time in a long time that Rian Johnson has discussed his future with the franchise and at the very least, it validated that he is still set to create his own trilogy at some point down the line.

Personally, while I wasn’t the biggest fan of The Last Jedi, I do think Johnson is a talented director and was curious to see what he could create with a blank slate in the galaxy far far away.

This article confirms that Johnson’s Star Wars trilogy is happening, but the question still remains “when?”
