The difference in the Resistance and the First Order is apparent in even just their training missions. Lives matter to the Resistance while the First Order only has one goal in mind in Star Wars Resistance.

Kaz is a good pilot. If things were going normally on the Colossus, he would have eventually joined the Aces the old-fashioned way. Unfortunately, nothing is as it used to be on Star Wars Resistance.

With the First Order imposing its will on the galaxy, Kaz got his place as one of the Aces in this week’s episode (Season 2, Episode 3), for his ability as a combat pilot.

More from Star Wars Resistance

Yeager has been named command leader over the Aces to train them to fight against the First Order. While there is reluctance from some of the Aces to become part of the battle, they all realize protecting the Colossus is the number-one goal.

Yeager comes from a place of tough love, protection and wanting to see everyone live. It’s an important distinction because as the Aces are training, so are the First Order pilots including Tam.

The training sessions couldn’t be more opposite in terms of tactics and motivation.

Yeager takes the team to what they think is an uninhabited ice moon. Yeager and Kaz are one team while the five other Aces form another. Surely, Yeager and Kaz win as they show how working as a team in combat has its benefits.

Hype wants nothing to do with this. He isn’t a combat pilot and realizes fighting the First Order is far different than fighting pirates. The stakes are much, much higher.

The green alien temporarily leave the Aces, but Torra talks to him and gets him to come back. Torra depsite being only a teenager is probably one of the most mature and smartest people on the show. She immediately recognized Hype’s problem.

He’s scared.

Torra got through to him by admitting she’s scared without accusing of him being the same. By Torra, a badass pilot who can take one anyone, admitting to being scared, it gave Hype the room to share those feelings too.

They went up for another training session, this time in teams of two for more a war-games type of run. Yet, the ice moon they thought was clear of life actually had a giant, flying ice squid who wasn’t happy about being interrupted in his home.

The giant squid managed to grab Yeager in its claws and he nearly became lunch. It was this moment where the Aces worked together and Hype came up with a plan to save Yeager. The light bulb went off for them in what Yeager had been trying to teach them.

The celebration afterward was worth it with the Aces downing drinks and the team officially welcoming Kaz. Though I will miss Hype’s nickname of Kaztastrophe because it was so appropiate.

Tam and the First Order

Everything that happpened on the Aces training run was a stark difference on what happened with the First Order’s training.

Tam went up in a TIE Fighter with several other First Order pilots. The pilot to down the most drones would become squadron leader. Tam showed she was an adept pilot and pretty good at taking down the drones too.

In fact, she was impressive.

Yet when Rucklin’s fighter was hit, he lost power and his controls went haywire. His TIE fighter was headed directly for the command ship and he would have been like a bug crashing against a windshield.

Rather than let that happen, Tam rushed to save Ruckin by knocking his ship off its trajectory, which saved his life — showing she is not First Order material.

When they got back to the command ship, rather than be awarded squadron leader, Tam was chastised for risking the mission and breaking off an attack. She was told by a First Order officer the First Order is built on survival of the fittest and the First Order becomes stronger by cutting off the weak parts.

Tam’s — no, 533’s — only job is to follow orders.

The shine is wearing off the First Order for Tam. It will only be a matter of time before she attempts to reach out to her old friends. Because while they hid that Kaz was a spy from her, Tam will realize why as she learns how deep the rot goes in the First Order.
