Seismic Charges

Easily the coolest part of Attack of the Clones is the chase through the asteroid fields of Geonosis. Obi-Wan Kenobi threw a homing beacon on Slave-1 after their scuffle on Kamino and followed Jango and Boba Fett to the planet where the battle droids are being manufactured. In order to get him off their tail, Jango flies through the asteroid ring that encompasses the planet.

The asteroids aren’t what makes this scene great though, it’s the weapon Jango deploys to destroy his pursuer. Seismic charges are sort of a space depth charge. They are dropped and create a giant wave of sound that destroys anything in its path. The best part about these weapons is the sound they make.

Ben Burtt has done some fantastic sound work throughout his time in the Star Wars saga but the sound he created for these bombs may be his best. After the bomb is deployed, the blue flames from the explosion are seen first, then there is a bit of a delay and then that deep, guttural buzz is heard as the waves ripple away from the point of impact.

It’s a very cool looking and satisfying explosion and one that was felt deep in the chest when watching the film in the theaters.

Seismic charges could actually be key for the Resistance to take down the First Order once and for all in the final space battle. As seen in the trailers, the First Order and or Palpatine have what looks like an endless fleet of Star Destroyers lined up and ready to destroy the forces of the Resistance.

A quick way to even the odds would be for the Resistance to stumble across a case or two of seismic charges. One of these could take out a large portion of the First Order’s fleet and could be key in the Resistance coming out on top.
