9. Palpatine’s “House of Cards”

If we have Padme’s version of The Crown, we have to have Palpatine’s version of House of Cards. We know that Palpatine is a Sith Lord who weaseled his way into both the Republic government and the mind of Anakin Skywalker. What we don’t know is how he managed to secure his place in the Senate and eventually win enough people over to gain the title of Chancellor.

Many people seemed to like Palpatine in the beginning of the prequels, but there’s not much explanation as to why. Many of the Jedi seem to be suspicious of him from the start, and it might be because of something in Palpatine’s past. Yes, he’s a Sith and could manipulate people fairly easily, but that’s just not enough of an explanation. How did Palpatine even become a Sith Lord? Was it before or after he entered politics?

An even more interesting question is how Darth Plageuis recruited Palpatine to become the next Sith Lord. Palpatine was the mastermind behind Vader and Darth Maul, but Palpatine didn’t come from nowhere. He was coached by Plageuis, who died when Palpatine killed him and took his place as Sith Lord. Remember that story Palpatine told Anakin about Plageuis during the opera in Revenge of the Sith? “He could save everyone but himself.” Yikes. Watching Palpatine build his house of cards might be stomach-turning, but we want to see it nonetheless.
