Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker brings in $376 million worldwide in first weekend
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker won the weekend box office, but should Disney be celebrating?
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was the number one movie in the world this past weekend. But the box office take could be looked at a two different ways.
First, it brought in $177 million domestically and $376 million worldwide.

For any movie, this is in an incredible number. Most movie companies would be thrilled with such a staggering number. But is it really a good number for Lucasfilm?
Here’s what makes it worthwhile:
It’s $376 million dollars. That’s not a paltry number in the movie world. When you consider some movies have good opening weekends bringing in $40-$50 million this absolutely blows that out of the water.
The opening weekend number is also the 12th highest total of all-time. All of the movies ahead of it on the list — except for one — is owned by Disney. So congrats to all of the Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar movies for making Disney a boatload of money.
Here’s why the number is a little worrisome:
Even though it’s the 12th-best opening weekend of all time (not accounting for inflation), it’s still the worst opening weekend of the sequel trilogy for the domestic box office. The Force Awakens (third: $248M) and The Last Jedi (fourth: $220M) both beat it by a considerable number.
After The Last Jedi backlash, there are fans who vowed not to see The Rise of Skywalker and perhaps are sticking to their word. There’s also the possibility that many ticket sales will also happen this week with people taking time off for the holidays.
Either way, it’s a good opening number for Star Wars, but also not a great number at the same time since it’s lagging behind the other sequel trilogy movies and Marvel’s big 2019 movies as well.
The Rise of Skywalker is currently in theaters.
