Star Wars: 6 questionable decisions in the Sequel Trilogy
By Nik Edlund
Basically Bringing Back the Empire
Of all the issues I have with the Sequel Trilogy the decision to basically bring back the Empire is the one that just never sat right with me. I get why they did it. Disney wanted to have familiar bad guys and an aura of nostalgia surrounding The Force Awakens, and having stormtroopers back was a necessary evil in accomplishing that feat. Story-wise it really doesn’t make any sense.
The Empire was defeated at the end of Return of the Jedi. Sure there could be remnants here and there that could band together and fight the New Republic. That would’ve happened within the first decade after the Battle of Endor. To see the First Order be this juggernaut of power with mass fleets of ships and a planet they turned into a superweapon is very hard to believe.
The Republic should’ve been the power in the galaxy thirty years after the destruction of the Second Death Star. They are the ones who should’ve had the vast fleet of ships and weaponry. It should’ve been an inverse of what we saw in the Orginal Trilogy. Making the bad guys more of a terroristic type of group would’ve made more sense. They could’ve planned small but devastating attacks on the New Republic and eventually gained strength throughout the new trilogy.
If Disney was hell-bent on having an all-powerful enemy group for our heroes to take on then a Yuuzhan-Vong type of alien invasion from the Expanded Universe would’ve made more sense. This would’ve worked with the Emperor’s resurrection. He could’ve corrupted a powerful species in the Unkown Regions that he could use to attack the Republic forces and get his revenge.
