With a rumored director’s cut for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the Star Wars fandom is further divided, but we are just playing into their games?

There is such a thing as a director’s cut. We’ve seen them before. But it seems there may be something more when it comes to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The fervor started when an anonymous Reddit user posted issues between J.J. Abrams and Disney. According to this unconfirmed, anonymous leak, Abrams and Disney did not see eye-to-eye and many things were cut from the movie that Abrams wanted to keep in.

Whether these leaks are true, it has already created more of a mess in a fandom that has had such serious issues that the toxic side is called The Fandom Menace.

The leak of the potential J.J. Abrams cut would seemingly relieve some of the issues fans had with the film: the pacing, less ReyLo scenes, exploring more of Finn’s story, etc. That doesn’t mean Abrams’ cut was the superior product, but it does invite many questions into the toxic discourse that has already enveloped the post-TROS conversation.

Why was there such a disconnect between Disney and Abrams?

Why did those changes cut scenes with Rey and Rose, eliminating powerful scenes between two women?

Why did Disney’s changes push forth a pro-Reylo agenda when Kylo Ren was an abusive monster for 95 percent of the sequel trilogy?

Why did those changes push Finn’s story to the side when he had been the co-lead in The Force Awakens?

While all these questions can be their own posts, these problems persist because there are huge issues at the top of this mess that then trickle down into the toxic parts of the Star Wars fandom.

Even if an Abrams’ cut exists – which could very well be the case because Director’s Cuts of movies aren’t unheard of – the way it was possibly revealed shows there are too many games being played from inside the walls of Lucasfilm and Disney.

The choices of the those in power show they don’t care one bit for the fans (and I never really thought they did), but are willing to watch the fandom burn to push their own agendas. It’s sad and annoying because we fell in love with Star Wars in spite of all of that.

It almost feels as though Star Wars fans have become puppets in the battles that are raging way above our heads.
