Star Wars rumor: Taika Waititi asked to work on new Star Wars film
By Chris White
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has been invited by LucasFilm to work on a new Star Wars film.
There’s no denying Taika Waititi is one of the most promising directors of recent years. Thor: Ragnarok is one of the finest movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and films like JoJo Rabbit (which recently earned six Oscar nominations) and What We Do in the Shadows have proved what a unique creative mind he has.
Waititi helmed the final episode of the hugely popular Disney + show The Mandalorian (and also voiced IG-11), so he’s no stranger to the Star Wars universe. Now it looks as though he’s going to be involved in a new Star Wars film, but exactly how is yet to be revealed.
We know Marvel mastermind Kevin Feige is currently in the process of developing a Star Wars film, and with Taika Waititi already working within the MCU, including the upcoming film Thor: Love and Thunder, it seems likely he will be involved.
There’s still a possibility he’ll be doing something completely different, but as yet no official announcement has been made.
Deborah Chow, another director on The Mandalorian, will be at the helm of the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney + series, so it seems Disney is impressed with those involved with its flagship show. Not only can he direct, but his eccentric acting and keen eye for fusing both comedic and dramatic storytelling into his performances means he’s a perfect fit for a new Star Wars movie.
