New Star Wars book announced: Poe Dameron’s backstory is heading your way
By Meg Dowell
Alex Segura’s debut Star Wars novel will take readers back to the era preceding the sequel trilogy to explore Poe Dameron’s past.
Regardless of your favorite Star Wars character from the sequel trilogy, it’s safe to say there’s plenty of demand for more content surrounding characters who may not have gotten enough screen time … as well as those who did.
Poe Dameron has already gotten his own standalone comic series and played a key role in the events leading up to the end of the Skywalker saga. Now, fans can get to know the details of his origins in a story of a different medium.

We’ve learned a little about Poe’s younger years through The Rise of Skywalker and its accompanying visual dictionary. Next, we’ll see the key events of his pre-sequel trilogy life told through a new book.
Alex Segura, author of numerous books and comics, will join the ranks of Claudia Gray, Delilah Dawson, and Timothy Zahn in his first Star Wars novel coming to a bookstore (or doorstep) near you later this summer.
The book, Star Wars: Poe Dameron: Free Fall, will explore a teenage Poe’s life to find meaning in the galaxy after the untimely death of his mother. Before joining the Resistance, before learning how to be a true leader, this hotshot pilot was just a kid searching for something bigger.
A new era of Star Wars books is beginning. Authors are no longer locked into stories and plot points that lead back to an unfinished film trilogy.
With the future of Star Wars movies shadowed in uncertainty, this is the time for stories told in books, comics, and even audio dramas to do what they’ve always been meant to do: expand the universe and give fans more ways to spend time with characters old and new.
Now, stories can focus not just on characters we know from the big screen, but also those we’ve never met before — those who may have been present alongside key events we’re already familiar with but never got the spotlight they deserved.
It may start with a book about Poe Dameron, and will continue with characters like Thrawn and members of Alphabet Squadron. But at this point, the storytelling possibilities are only going to multiply.
Polygon broke the news of the book.
Poe Dameron: Free Fall is set to release in August 2020, and will be available for pre-order soon.
