Though the entire cast of Rogue One were arguably contenders for Star Wars’ most heartbreaking deaths, Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor’s demise certainly stood out from the rest of the all too large crowd.

Jyn is the daughter of Galen Erso, a man captured by the Empire and forced into helping them build the Death Star. Jyn meets Captain Cassian when she is recruited by the Rebel Alliance to help find her father and discover a way to destroy the Death Star.

While Cassian and Jyn are at odds for a large chunk of the film, the two eventually fall in love as they learn more about each other on the joint mission the embark on together. Eventually, the two reached the planet of Scarif where they stole secret plans Jyn’s father had created to destroy the Death Star from the Imperial security complex.

Though Jyn and Cassian –the last surviving members of their quad– managed to transmit the plans to the Rebel Alliance, the Death Star had fired upon Scarif. Jyn and Erso’s love was short-lived and the two died in the blast, holding each other till the end, in true Shakespearan tragedy form.
