Star Wars Character Deaths
Thandie Newton is Val in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY. /

Val

Val, a character unwilling to reveal her last name, shows up in the Star Wars franchise during the Solo prequel film as a member of criminal Tobias Beckett’s heist crew. During the war on Mimban, a young Han Solo and his new friend Chewy meet up with Val and Beckett and ask to join the crew.

Han finally manages to convince the spunky and sharp-witted Val, the rough and tough Beckett and their alien pilot Rio Durant to let him and Chewy in on their upcoming heist to rob a train full of expensive Coaxium cargo. But during the operation, Val is cornered by viper probe droids and makes the choice to detonate a bomb on the train bridge to help Beckett in the heist, killing herself as a result.

In addition to the fact that Star Wars lost yet another strong-willed powerhouse female character, Val’s time in the Star Wars universe was far too short and her death was much too bitter. The night before, her and Beckett–who are romantically involved–tell Han their dreams of retirement and to live a life happily ever after together. It’s true, we should have seen this as a prelude to the fact that those dreams would never come true, but we wanted to believe Val deserved better than an early in the film death.
