Mother Talzin

Mother Talzin was an evil Force wielding sorceress from the planet Dathomir. This is super cool for a number of reasons. First of all, Dathomir was a planet that was featured in one of the first post Return of the Jedi novels in the excellent Courtship of Princess Leia by Dave Wolverton. To see that planet used in a show that is considered Star Wars canon was a great touch.

Second, and most importantly, she is one of the few dark side users in the Star Wars saga who was female.

Other than Assaj Ventress, we really don’t have any evil female force users in Star Wars. To see one who wasn’t a typical Sith was quite fascinating. Mother Talzin was more of a Dark Side witch who used the Force to cast spells and enhance the power of her sons Maul and Savage Oppress.

Talzin’s strength in the Dark Side attracted Darth Sidious. He traveled to Dathomir to convince her to be his apprentice. Instead, he abducted Maul and made him his apprentice. Talzin never forgave him for that and later formed a plot to assassinate Sidious and Dooku. That plan ultimately failed and Talzin and her coven of Nightsisters were wiped out by Grievous and the droid army. She returned from the spirit world long enough to help Darth Maul get his mind back, but that act permanently ended her life, sending her to the spirit world for good.

Talzin was a fresh character among the likes we had never seen before, and while her arc in The Clone Wars wasn’t a long one, it was definitely one to remember.
