Hondo Ohnaka

While we had heard Lando Calrissian call Han Solo an old pirate, we had never actually gotten to see one in Star Wars until Hondo Ohnaka made his appearance in the Clone Wars. What a character he turned out to be. Ohnaka was motivated by greed and money and always had a trick or two up his sleeve to escape capture our get the best of a deal.

Hondo was a familiar alien race of Weequay, which made its first appearance on Jabba’s sail barge in Return of the Jedi. He had his own pirate gang, and he was purely driven by making a profit and getting more and more of those credits.

The best part about Hondo Ohnaka was his sharp wit. He had a plethora of memorable lines in The Clone Wars with one of the more famous being his retort to Darth Maul when Maul told them they’d pay for their insolence. Ohnaka replied that they were pirates and don’t even know what that means, and then opened fire on Maul and his brother.

Ohnaka occasionally would help out the Jedi if it in turned benefited him and his gang. The same could be said for the Separatists as he was very much a neutral participant in the war unless he gained some sort of financial benefit for his help. After the Clone Wars, he was more on the side of the Rebels as he took a liking to Ezra Bridger and routinely helped out the crew of The Ghost. Ohnaka was the first true pirate we got to see in Star Wars and he definitely didn’t disappoint.
