Baby Yoda takes over Toy Fair 2020; Are you ready?
If you have been waiting to get your hands on a Baby Yoda toy, it’s almost time. The Mandalorian has taken over Toy Fair with plenty of new merch on the way.
There’s really only one thing you have to know about this year’s Toy Fair.
Baby Yoda.
When The Mandalorian premiered last year, Star Wars fans fell in love with the character affectionately known as Baby Yoda. Technically, it’s name is The Child, but that won’t spoil the fun fans, collectors and companies are having with the small, cute green figure.
One thing that surprised many was there was no merchandise for Baby Yoda, not even in time for last year’s holiday season. It may have seem liked a missed opportunity, but was done for a very good reason.
However, all that has changed and it looks as though Star Wars is all-in on the Baby Yoda merchandise. Take a look at a few pics from Thursday’s Toy Fair product showcase, which hasn’t even officially kicked off yet.
You can see the plethora of Baby Yoda items that are ready to hit the market soon — with countless more on the way as the season rolls on.
Given the opportunity, Star Wars could have cashed in last holiday season. Many wondered why this type of Baby Yoda merchandise wasn’t ready last year. After all, the show premiered in September 2019. That should have been plenty of time to have a few items for purchase.
Without talking to anyone from Lucasfilm, but knowing how this industry works, it’s likely because LFL was looking to avoid spoilers.
Baby Yoda was a HUGE deal for Star Wars and The Mandalorian (one that I admittedly got wrong when I first heard about it). He was cute, innocent, cuddly and helped us remember why we fell in love with this galaxy.

Sure, LFL could have easily cashed in on the hype, but I think part of the appeal was also the surprise of it all.
If Baby Yoda merch had gone into production before the series started to get it out in time for last holiday season, we would have been spoiled. It takes at least 3-6 months to get an item ready for production between creating samples, licensor approvals and finally getting to the final approval stage. Someone, somewhere would have spoiled Baby Yoda for the rest of us.
Before you think, ‘No way, there are NDAs in place.’
There sure are, but that didn’t stop the entire plot of The Rise of Skywalker being leaked.
So it seems, Lucasfilm or Disney opted to wait on the money-making part of merchandising for the sake of the adorable and wonderful surprise that was Baby Yoda.
Now, they’re ready to cash in and Toy Fair is the place to check out all the new items you’ll be able to get soon.
