Project Luminous details have finally been revealed
By Meg Dowell
After almost a year of waiting and speculation, Del Rey has finally revealed details of its Project Luminous publishing project.
On the final day of Star Wars Celebration Chicago in April 2019, Lucasfilm Publishing first announced a mysterious publishing project. They called it Project Luminous.
Since then, we have learned the authors presumed to be involved in the project. We learned it would be a joint publishing effort between Lucasfilm Publishing, Marvel, Del Rey Books, and IDW Publishing.

The rest — for nearly a year — has been all speculation.
Until now.
Late Monday night, the long-awaited details of Project Luminous were finally revealed to the public through an official event open to the media.
As previously stated, Project Luminous does not involve any tie-ins to future films, TV shows, or video games … yet.
It is strictly a series of books and comics all revolving around the previously untold stories of the High Republic.
Rumors about Project Luminious involving the High Republic era have been circulating for a few weeks now. So for most of the fandom, it’s a relief to finally have confirmation that we are indeed moving backward in the Star Wars timeline, not forward.
Future stories could potentially progress beyond the end of the Skywalker Saga — as they should — but those are, officially, stories for another time. For now, the expanded universe will presumably focus on an era before the Skywalker Saga began.
Starting this year — thankfully we don’t have to wait much longer; we’ve waited long enough — new stories in a new era of Star Wars will be available to the masses.
Here’s a quick breakdown of what was announced Monday night.
- The events of Project Luminous take place 200 years before The Skywalker Saga
- The High Republic Era’s villains are being compared to Space Vikings (more on that later, maybe)
- This interconnected story begins with a “Great Disaster” that will set the project’s events in motion
- Books and comics will span across genres and age categories
- The idea for Project Luminous was originally pitched back in 2014. (So we’re not the only ones who have been waiting awhile.)
- Project Luminous will be released in phases (!). This is Phase 1.
BOOKS AND COMICS ANNOUNCED:
- Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule (August 25, 2020)
- A Test of Courage by Justina Ireland
- The High Republic (Marvel comic series) by Cavan Scott
- The High Republic Adventures (IDW) by Daniel José Older
- Into the Dark by Claudia Gray.
Everyone involved in this project can now breathe a collective sigh of relief. No more secrets. No more teases. Project Luminous is here. Well … almost.
While you’re waiting for the first of the above things to be released, there are plenty of other Star Wars books and comics to hold you over. High on our recommendations list: Resistance Reborn by Rebecca Roanhorse and pretty much every Star Wars comic Charles Soule has touched. Enjoy!
