The Clone Wars: Will the series end with Obi-Wan recording his message and a young Kanan on the run?
With Star Wars: The Clone Wars reaching its conclusion on May 4, will the beloved series end with Obi-Wan recording his message and could we see a young Kanan Jarrus on the run?
[Please note that Star Wars Rebels character, Kanan Jarrus is referred in this article as Caleb Dume.]
We’ve all know since the final season of The Clone Wars was announced that we’d have to say goodbye to the series many of us grew up with. Many of the fates of the characters we love have already been revealed in other forms of mediums, including Revenge of the Sith.

There’s one point that hasn’t been explored. In Star Wars Rebels, Kanan Jarrus owns a Jedi Holocron from his days as an apprentice, where his name is Caleb Dume. We learn in the television movie Spark of Rebellion that Obi-Wan Kenobi recorded a hologram for the Jedi to stay away from Coruscant.
The John Jackson Miller novel, A New Dawn explains that Kenobi became inspired by Caleb’s idea of warning the Jedi NOT to return to Coruscant in the case of an emergency. It’s also stated that the beacon was created to bring members back to the capital if a large enough threat arose.
We know the final episodes of The Clone Wars overlap with Revenge of the Sith. Obi-Wan referred to Anakin’s slaughter of Count Dooku, which occurred at the beginning that film. He also mentions he’s on his way to Utapau during a conversation he has with Bo-Katan.
It’s never been made clear when Obi-Wan recorded the message. He could have made it either before or after his duel with Anakin on Mustafar. Given the timeframe, it makes more sense for the signal to be sent out afterward because he mentions ‘the Jedi Order has fallen’. The order hadn’t truly fallen until after Anakin’s defeat as he and Obi-Wan were still technically Jedi with very different perspectives. Though, it might be possible he recorded the content after his lecture with Caleb’s class, in case of an emergency.
Caleb Escapes Order 66
We were fortunate enough to get a glimpse of Caleb Dume as a hologram with his master, Depa Billaba in the episode ‘Old Friends Not Forgotten’. After this, there are the Kanan comics that explore the Cowboy Jedi’s time as a Padawan and how he survived Order 66.
Though, we need to ask ourselves if we might get this in the series finale. We probably won’t as it will probably finish with Ahsoka and Rex faking their own deaths and Anakin on the Dark Side. However, it would be nice to see where the surviving characters end up before we catch up with them later.
We also need to stress that Caleb was added much later in the production of the last season. When the show was originally produced, the character never existed until the early planning stages of Star Wars Rebels.
