Best: Lando Calrissian is back
The Skywalker Saga has given us plenty of new characters throughout the trilogy, but it also wasn’t afraid to let some of the most beloved characters from the original trilogy have a moment to shine. The best example in The Rise of Skywalker is the return of Lando Calrissian.
While on Pasaana, Rey and company find themselves in a bind as The First Order discovers their presence. In their moment of need, it seems a stranger comes to their aid, but that stranger is revealed to be none other than Lando Calrissian.
Billy Dee Williams has over the years been one of the most beloved cast members from the original trilogy, and his return on The Rise of Skywalker and immediate reunion with Chewbacca was truly heartwarming. Lando’s importance in the final battle back at the helm of the Millennium Falcon only added to it.
Worst: Finn gets a fourth romantic interest, still doesn’t end up with her
Let me be very clear. Star Wars didn’t absolutely need a romantic subplot, but considering the ones we get in both previous trilogies it wasn’t exactly farfetched to expect one here. In The Force Awakens, the first one hinted at is between Finn and Rey when they meet on Jakku.
The second, and most potentially significant, is the budding relationship between Finn and Poe that the saga seemed too scared to embrace. Instead of opting for a groundbreaking same sex romance, every single film introduces a new potential female love interest for Finn.
Rose Tico and Jannah are both fantastic characters who were fantastically played, but were also clearly positioned at times as potential love interests for Finn. Yet, despite their desire to set up every possible reason for Finn not to end up with Poe, he ended up with literally none of them.
