Weapons we want to appear in the High Republic era taken from Legends
The Star Wars The High Republic publishing project will date back almost 300 years before the Battle of Yavin when the Jedi were at their peak. Books and comics are slowly being revealed, but that also begs the question as to what Legends weapons we might see appear.
Before the reveal of Project Luminous, Star Wars fans had speculated what it going to entail. In late February 2020, it was confirmed the High Republic would be the focus of this new avenue of storytelling within a galaxy far, far, away which would be set about 300 years before the Battle of Yavin.
As intriguing as this might be, we’re also interested if the era will explore weapons that were once part of Legends. We took to Twitter with a poll, which didn’t give us as many results as we wanted, but we’re going to work with it. Before we begin, we need to mention that some, of not all the weapons referenced have been added to canon but not in great detail.

Lightwhip
The first weapon we would like to see added during the High Republic era is the Lightwhip. This is a highly modified lightsaber that transmits plasma blades with a pliable containment field that allows it to be flexible. There are small emitters that create flimsy blades that can reach any length the user closes.
Unlike its lightsaber counterpart, a lightwhip’s blade is somewhat weaker and doesn’t have the same capacity to cut through objects. Instead, the whip-like blade allows for capture or entanglement of targets.
In Legends, the Lightwhip was also known as an energy whip or laser whip and was considered a rare variation of the lightsaber. Known owners of this weapon included Githany, Silri, and the Sith Lady Lumiya. The Jedi and the Sith were known users of this unique weapon and it could be bought for 11,400 credits during the Galactic Civil War or 5,000 credits any other time.
According to the Twitter poll, 33% of people wanted the lightwhip to be reintroduced into Canon during the High Republic era.
Lightsaber Pike
Of the four weapons we’re talking about today, the Lightsaber Pike is one we’ve seen in Canon already a great amount. During the Clone Wars, the Jedi Temple Guards wielded these. They were thick, but somewhat imposing lightsaber variant with a rare yellow blade and were double-bladed. Some had shoto blade on one end.
During the trial of Ahsoka Tano, the Lightsaber Pikes were used to restrain the teenager’s master, Anakin Skywalker. A few years after the Clone Wars ended, former Padawan Caleb Dume, now going by Kanan Jarrus was officially knighted in a vision by the Jedi Temple Guard who eventually became his adversary, the Grand Inquisitor.
In Legends, the weapon was also known as the lightsaber lance and had a deep association with not just the Jedi, but the Sith, Knights of Zakuul and the Emperor’s Shadow Guard. There was also a couple of different versions of the saber including a spear-like version and one that wasn’t the same yet similar known as the cortosis staff.
On our Twitter poll, 33% voted to see the Lightsaber Pike during the High Republic era.
Proto-saber
Unlike the other weapons on this list, the Proto-saber doesn’t actually have a legends counterpart. This type of lightsaber didn’t come into existence until two years before the Battle of Yavin after it was found at an Imperial base. It was created on Mustafar and is referred to by the native Mustafarians as the laser sword.
The Proto-saber is believed to have functioned differently than the lightsabers we’ve all come to know. This prototype didn’t have a plasma blade but two prongs that formed a crossguard. Upon its activation, energy would form a blade when it rose rapidly up the prongs.
In our Twitter poll, 33% want to see the proto-saber during the High Republic era.
Lightclub/Great lightsaber
The last weapon we were able to add to our Twitter poll and got 0% is the Lightclub as it is known in Legends. In Canon, it is known as the Great lightsaber.
We’re going to begin with the Lightclub explanation first. The weapon was basically a lightsaber that used special focusing crystals that could project a blade of up to three meters. These were larger than regular lightsabers, which were open used by Force users with a stature that was classified as immense.
One example was Jedi General Pong Krell who had double-bladed lightsabers that could be seen as Lightclubs as the hilts were larger than a normal lightsaber.
Now, onto the Great lightsaber. In Canon, this weapon was seen as basically a lightsaber with a larger than normal hilt. However, these were often seen as awkward and heavy to use. A human who tried to wield one would see it as difficult.
