“We had each other…that’s how we won.” – Lando Calrissian

One of the biggest injustices in the entire sequel trilogy was Lando Calrissian not appearing until the final episode. As big a role as had in the original trilogy, he really should’ve been in every single film. He was the fourth major protagonist in the original saga, despite not coming in until the middle chapter. Fans were certainly relieved when news broke that Billy Dee Williams would be returning to his role as Lando.

Lando doesn’t have a ton of screen time in The Rise of Skywalker but he does have a couple of great moments. One is toward the end of the film. Leia Organa-Solo dies, sacrificing herself to push Ben back to the light.

Poe Dameron is distraught at losing his mentor and mother figure in his life and is questioning how their ragtag group of freedom fighters can stand up and destroy the mighty First Order. Lando overhears this and bestows some wisdom upon the young leader of the Resistance. After a brief conversation where Poe asks them how they did it, Lando says, “We had each other…that’s how we won.”

This is great advice and it shows how the power of friendship and wanting to do right by your friends, can overcome the greatest of odds. Luke didn’t want to let his friends down and that gave him the courage to confront Darth Vader and the Emperor. Han stood up to the fear of potentially dying when he was being lowered into the carbon freezing chamber, but stayed strong enough to give Leia an iconic retort to her declaration of love. Even Lando himself showed great dedication to his friends and their cause when he led the rebel attack against the Empire even though he wasn’t exactly thrilled to take on that role.

Sometimes being loyal and true to your friends and having their back even against the most unlikely of odds, can be the most powerful thing there is. That is essentially what Lando is telling Poe, as they say goodbye to their longtime friend.
